TRANSITION TOWN SEVENOAKS

Transition Towns

is a national movement, to respond to the impacts of climate change and peak oil in a positive way,
by stimulating a transition from our fossil fuel dependence to a much better and pleasanter way of living, resilient against rising energy and food prices.

It involves the entire community with its many diverse groups, societies and clubs working together to unleash our collective creativity and skills. And to create the Sevenoaks in which we know we really want to live – cleaner, safer, friendlier and vibrant, all in all a better as well as truly sustainable quality of life.

WHY ?
Climate change means we must reduce carbon emissions
No more cheap energy so we must reduce energy use
Plus rising food prices, the financial crisis, recession......

DOOM and GLOOM ?
No! We have to change our ways, sure. But this is an opportunity
to plan a shift to a better way of living, instead of an abrupt change.

HOW ?
We can meet our needs and still be comfortable with less energy,
food miles, ready meals, driving, waste – and save money.
Instead, more energy efficiency, cycling and walking, supporting our local economy,
growing and cooking our own food, other skills.

CAN WE ?
Definitely, if we harness the vast creativity, knowledge and skills
of our community – all working together as a Transition Town.

So what's actually happening?

A core group of half a dozen are raising awareness, planning events, and seeking to link up with other community organisations to work together on the many aspects of Transition: energy, transport, food and gardening, skills, buildings, health and so on. Next events:

* 23 November 11-1pm, seed and plant swap at Quakers Hall
Lane allotments ; garden doctor on hand to give advice. Free!

* 4 December 8.00pm Sevenoaks Community Centre, film showing "Power
of Community" and discussion ; with refreshments. £3 at door

* 17 January, lunch meeting with representatives of interested
community organisations, Community Centre; lunch provided.

Sounds good - where can I find out more?
